The huge energy savings are achieved through:
- Upgraded under-floor insulation - for improved heat transmission values (U-values)
- Additional improved insulation of the walls and roof - to further reduce heat loss
- Further insulation savings achieved due to a thicker door and a new double-glazed window design
- Improved heating system, using an innovative split heat pump which uses energy from the air outside - producing approximately 4.5kW of heating for every 1kW of electricity consumed
- High frequency lighting - an efficient type of illumination that uses less energy
- Passive Infrared (PIR) motion detection sensors - mean lights are off when they aren't needed, reducing lost energy by around 7%
- Time clocks on heaters - to prevent wastage
- CFC-free ozone friendly foam insulation - which performs 42% better than the rock wool alternative and delivers exceptional insulation. It also has an ozone depleting potential of zero and a thermal conductivity of 0.025W/mK.

1 Running cost for heating/climate control and lighting only
2 The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for the typical site cabin is based on similar assumptions to the EPC that has been officially lodged for the Konstructa Energy-Saver Plus building.
Notes:
- The energy-use and carbon-emission figures quoted are based on grid supplied electricity and include an allowance for small power loads at 11.5 W/m2 but not Domestic Hot Water (DHW) loads However, the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating quoted does not include the small power loads but includes for DHW loads.
- Since this building does not include any ablution facilities the following DHW system has been assumed for EPC calculation purposes and would be practical and achievable for this type of building;
- Direct electric storage heater located close to the ablution facilities and designed such that NO secondary circulation
and pumping is required i.e. it is main pressure/gravity fed. - 20 litres storage allocated to this building with a cylinder heat loss of 0.0133 kWh/litre.day.
